Dark Eyes |
From Louis Armstrong to
Pavarotti they have all sung and played this Russian folk-song.
And also our arrangement serves as a living proof for the fact that
the different interpretations converse discreetly with each other
while standing on the CD-shelf, if we only have ears to listen closely.
We start the piece with an elegiac waltz, plunge ourselves right into
a gripping Swing of the Forties, and end (God knows how) in a fiery
dance around a gipsy-fire. The Balkans: What do you expect!

Theme From Miss Marple (Ron Goodwin) |
Our hommage to Margret Rutherford,
the Lara Croft of the Sixties. She used to be a pianoteacher for a
long time before she was discovered for the screen: not a moment too
late, in our humble opinion. Alas, not every piano-teacher has the
talent to become such a femme fatale, although a lot of them have
driven a lot of us out of our senses. pdf |

Two Guitars |
Yet another Balkan-classic
that knocks you off your feet! Still, we can´t quite make out
what guitars should have to do with it: It sounds much better when
played by a salon-ensemble lead by a veritable primas. So, no guitars,
please! This tartar folk-song even had words (rather incomprehensible
because entirely in Russian) before we were through with it; verses
full of sweet melancholy and romantic longing. It went something like
this: Our head is aching from drinking. We drink today, we´ll
drink tomorrow, and the whole week: One more, one more, and many,
many more! So, better not call a tartan, after all! pdf

Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy by Tschaikowski
(1840-1893) |
In German speaking countries
this enchanting dance of the fairies is very well known, especially
due to its being used on records with fairy-tales. It is also frequently
used as Christmas music under the tree (no dance intended, of course).
In our arrangement the piano has the part of the original celesta:

Flower Waltz by Tshaikowski (1840-1893) |
Tshaikovski
caprice of Mother Nature: Women not his glass of tea
.
But apart from that: It need not always be Johann Strauß or
any other of this vast dynasty. Why not Tshaikovski for a change?
So, here comes a highly danceable and concertant waltz from the Land
Of Sweets: Yet another highlight from the Nutcracker-Suite.

Wedding March from "A Midsummer
Night´s Dream" by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) |
Probably the most popular
piece on any of the Four Weddings. And indeed, there is no other piece
of music more dashing than this one to lead the bride with verve to
the altar. Due to its duration, it goes very well with very large
churches or cathedrals with considerable space between the entrance
and the altar. With this piece, there is no danger of running out
of music and no need to turn the procession into a festive sprint.
There may even be time to get hold of a bride who in an inattentive
moment may have gone astray. pdf |

Wedding March (Bridal Chorus) from Lohengrin
by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) |
Not in the least less popular
than Mendelssohn´s famous Wedding-March: The Bridal-Choir
from Wagner´s Lohengrin. No doubt, it is the most
popular piece of the whole opera. With this wedding-march even Rowan
Atkinson as Johnny English might lead a bride safely to the altar.

Ave Maria (Ellen´s Song) by Franz
Schubert (1797-1828) |
There are several hundreds
of compositions of the religious classic Ave Maria. This
one by Schubert is, besides that of Gounod´s, with no doubt
one of the most popular ones. Originally, Schubert had chosen the
text Ellen´s Song by Sir Walter Scott. One of the
verses read: Oh listen to a maiden´s prayer. If
not ambiguous, this was certainly suggestive. So, Schubert decided
to use the more enigmatic, incomprehensible Latin text. But he couldn´t
fool us! In our elaborate instrumental version we eliminated the naughty
stanza. pdf

Song to the Moon (Rusalka) by Anton Dvorak
(1841-1904) |
Rusalka´s very popular
aria by Anton Dvorak. To be sung at night, moon shining down on some
stagnant water, a lake, a pond, a pool - no matter how deep. However,
if the waters are of considerable depth, one might want a brave young
hero to save Rusalka from the last slippery step forward. Or backward,
as the case may be. We don´t take any responsibility for the
key (G Flat-Major). That was entirely Dvorak´s idea! pdf |

Flight of the Bumble-Bee by Rimsky-Korsakoff
(1844-1908) |
Very popular interlude from
The Tale Of Zsar Zaltan. A definite show-piece for violin,
alternatively for cello. Both versions (with complete alternative
voices) are included in our arrangement! If the violin or the cello
have the same breath and technique, one might even try to let the
bumble-bees fly together. But we reject any responsibility for a safe
landing! Strictly physically spoken (so it is written in the books),
bumble-bees shouldn´t even be able to fly, anyway. But apparently
they can´t read either. pdf
